A435 Road Closures: Essential Travel Tips for Runners and Residents

Key Dates to Remember

  • Full Road Closure: 19 May to 22 August 2025
  • Northbound Closure: 23 August to 17 October 2025

The A435 Evesham Road is set to undergo significant construction work from May to October 2025, resulting in road closures that will impact travel between Bishop’s Cleeve and Cheltenham. Whether you’re a runner, walker, or local resident, these closures may affect your daily routes. Here’s what you need to know, including key dates, alternative routes, and how to plan ahead.

What’s Happening?

The A435 Cycleway Section 2 Phase 2 project aims to enhance connectivity between Cheltenham and Bishop’s Cleeve by constructing a new shared-use cycleway and footway alongside road improvements. However, the project requires the following closures:

  1. Full Road Closure (19 May to 22 August 2025):

    • The A435 will be closed in both directions between the Cheltenham Racecourse roundabout and Hyde Lane/Southam Lane junction.
    • This closure facilitates bridge realignment and strengthening while ensuring safety for construction workers and the public.
  2. Northbound Closure (23 August to 17 October 2025):

    • Only southbound traffic (Bishop’s Cleeve to Cheltenham) will be permitted.
    • The closure allows construction on the east side of the road, reducing the overall project timeline.

Pedestrian and cyclist access will remain open throughout the closures, ensuring some level of connectivity.

Alternative Routes for Travel

To help runners, residents, and visitors navigate the closures, here are recommended alternative routes:

  • Bishop’s Cleeve to Cheltenham (via Southam):
Use the B4632, which bypasses the closure by connecting Southam to northeast Cheltenham and Prestbury.
    • Access the B4632 through New Road or Southam Lane for a seamless detour.

This route ensures smooth travel to key locations on the east side of Cheltenham.

Cheltenham Running Club Meeting Points

For CRWC members and runners, our regular meeting points are conveniently located on the east side of Cheltenham:

  1. Pittville Pump Rooms
  2. Royal Oak, Prestbury
  3. Whiskers Cafe, Prestbury

Using the B4632 route will make it easy to reach these locations, even during the closures.

Plan Ahead for Smooth Travel

To avoid delays and disruptions, we recommend:

  • Checking Travel Times: Leave earlier to adjust for potential delays.
  • Following Diversion Signs: Gloucestershire County Council will provide clear signage to guide drivers.
  • Staying Updated: Visit the A435 Cycleway Scheme Webpage for the latest updates and construction details.

Why These Closures Are Necessary

The A435 Cycleway project is a vital improvement for the area, connecting Cheltenham with Bishop’s Cleeve through safer and more accessible routes for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The closures ensure safety and efficiency during construction, minimizing the overall disruption to residents and road users.
