From Nervous Beginner to Confident Runner: Abi’s Couch to 5K Journey in Cheltenham

When Abi joined Cheltenham Running Club’s Beginners Couch to 5K programme, she wasn’t sure what to expect. Ten weeks later, she’s fitter, more confident, and surrounded by a new group of friends who have supported her every step of the way.

Here’s what she had to say about her journey.

1. Running with a Group Made All the Difference

“Joining was definitely the best decision I have made this year. Running with a group is so much better than attempting it alone. The run nights are fun, and chatting makes it so much easier. You encourage each other and share a joint sense of pride when you reach new milestones.”

For Abi, the turning point was completing her first continuous 45-minute run. “It felt amazing! If you know a friendly group is waiting for you, you’re far more likely to go out and do it.”

2. Support Through the WhatsApp Community

Being part of a group chat provided extra encouragement. “Posting my solo runs and receiving instant praise gave me a wonderful feeling. It also kept me accountable — you’re less likely to skip a run if your friends haven’t seen you post in a while! Our WhatsApp group has even become a social chat, and we’re planning a curry night soon.”

3. Scenic Routes and Social Meet-Ups

Cheltenham Running Club makes things simple for beginners by planning every route. “We get a lovely variety: the beauty of Pittville Park, the popular Honeybourne Line, and scenic countryside routes around Prestbury and the Racecourse. Thursday nights finish at the Royal Oak, which is a great chance for a drink with new friends.”

4. Guidance When Things Don’t Go to Plan

Abi also valued having coach support when illness struck. “I caught a cough and felt too breathless to run. Without Conor checking in, I might have given up. Instead, he suggested walking first, then adding short runs. Within weeks, I was back with the group on their 14-minute runs. On my own, I might have quit — but seeing the group progress pushed me through.”

5. Health Check & Lifestyle Change

Back in March, Abi realised she was the heaviest she’d been and started making changes.

“I began eating more healthily but also wanted to improve my general fitness, mental health, and feel less sluggish. The combination of eating better and running three times a week with the club has helped me lose weight and change my shape. I’m feeling more confident each day.”

This summer, just before turning 45, Abi had her first 40+ health check-up. “When I stepped on the scales, I reminded myself that even though I’m still a little overweight, through the running programme I am actively doing something about it. The nurse was pleased to hear that and reiterated the benefits of group exercise for both physical and mental wellbeing.”

6. Why Beginners Should Join

“To anyone wondering if this is worthwhile, or whether you could just do it alone, I’d say: join. You won’t regret it. You’ll make new friends, enjoy it more, be more likely to keep at it, and have a coach if you hit bumps in the road.”

The Future Looks Bright

Abi is now looking ahead with excitement. “I’m fitter, getting slimmer, have a great new hobby, and I’m looking forward to parkruns and working towards longer events. I won’t look back!”
